Fourth Year

Self Motivated Brief
The Woodland

This project is a continuation of the self motivated brief i was working to at the end of my third year. I feel i was unable to explore enough of the topic in the time scale i had, and therefore have decided to continue with the same brief throughout my fourth and final year. This project will be continually worked upon until the end of year, at which point, all work produced will go towards my degree show.
The project itself will look at the British woodland environment, taking inspiration from various elements within that. I will look closely at colour, texture and pattern incorporated with traditional handcraft techniques such as knit and embroidery to create sculptural pieces that fit within an interiors context.

I will be updating the work produced on a regular basis to show the progression of the project throughout the year.

Third Year

Craft Interventions

This project was set to coincide with an exhibition being held at the university called Future Craft. The brief was set to encourage the use of a craft based technique to act as an intervention within the proposed environment.
The exhibition was set in the Matthew building within the Duncan of Jordanstone art school and it would be this environment which would dictate how the intervention would work.
I wanted to incorporate the use of knit within my piece and decided to
work with the concrete walls of the building as my
inspiration. Vertical strips of concrete are a very prominent feature within and it was this i wanted to reflect in my piece. I also wanted my intervention to be  a piece that would blend into its surroundings, the idea of using the knitted structures to soften the very harsh, rigid walls.
I used a combination of machine and finger knitted lengths
to works alongside the vertical strips to create a wall hanging.

Third Year

RSA Project

The RSA was a competition based project.
I chose to base my particular project in the category of 'Digitex' (exploring the benefits of digital finishing through textiles). I proposed the use of digitex within textile design to help people suffering from depression and anxiety.
In my brief i was required to use a minimum of two textile functionalities within
my design, i concentrated on the use of chromic materials and a
controlled slow release function.
The idea was to design a product to sit within an interiors context, which incorporated colour, pattern and the release of aromatherapy smells/ medication to help combat the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
I researched thoroughly the ways in which colour, light, and smell can work alongside medication to help improve a persons mood and well being. With this in mind i looked at producing a wallpaper which could trigger a
colour change through heat and touch, as well as this i also looked into the use of high intensity lux bulbs to help sufferers of
Seasonal Affective Disorder.
To work alongside the colour change functions i was
interested in using machine embroidery to create a pattern that could be
seen at any point, making it suitable for use as an everyday product.
